(DISCO off the beaten path)

The photograph included here is from the 123Dentist website which features an article entitled "Off The Beaten Path In Ontario: Places Tourists Never Visit, But You Should". The photo is of the Brockville Railway Tunnel. Here is what the article says: "Brockville Railway Tunnel Although not many people know about the Brockville Railway Tunnel, it’s actually the oldest railway tunnel in Canada. Today, the tunnel is a recreational path that travels under downtown Brockville. Not only is the tunnel a fun way to travel under several city blocks, but it also features an amazing LED-coloured light system programmed to play along with a recorded music track while you walk through it." Today we feature some of hundreds of examples of DISCO from the 1970's and early 1980's that, regardless how good they were, failed to get into the highly competitive mainstream of the DISCO industries. They just could not compete at the time, falling off the beaten path. Some listeners may have never heard of many of these artists. Included are JAPANESE DISCO artists that failed to match the incredible popularity and influence of YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA and MIDNIGHT POWERS. They include SPECTRUM, CANDY DARLING AND THE VISCOUNTS, and THE EASTERN GANG which was actually released in Canada. From Canada we have included a local record. Yes, a local record! It was released by the CRYSTAL DISCO BAND in 1979. Recorded in Gatineau, Quebec, It was an uptempo TRIBAL SPACE track that was locally released and sold in Ottawa area Disco Record Shops like Dorval, Pro Disco, and Shocking Blue. It just couldn't compete against the likes of THE ROCKETS, SPACE, or Canada's wildly popular "The Ultimate Warlord" by THE IMMORTALS. The Brockville Railway Tunnel sounds absolutely spectacular! During the summer they could have dj's playing live in the Tunnel. It might actually bring in more tourists. All the same it is a quality attraction. All of these records are quality productions which were forced off the beaten path by the ferociously competitive market. We will try to provide more artist information. Enjoy a DISCO journey off the beaten path!

JOY

JOY is a South African vocal group that is famous for their 1980 hit "Paradise Road". Some sources have identified "Paradise Road" as an unofficial anthem of the Republic of South Africa. Their 1978 single "Jerusalem" was even released on a 7" single in West Germany by Metronome, yet it failed to compete in the Eurodisco market. Most of the success for JOY was in South Africa in the early 1980's.

THE LTG. EXCHANGE

There were actually dozens of groups in the New York City area trying to compete with the likes of KOOL & THE GANG, FATBACK and THE CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR. One of which was a band called the LEO TAURUS GEMINI EXCHANGE. They shortened their name to 'THE LTG. EXCHANGE' with some success in the early 1970's. The most popular example was their instrumental version of the song "Waterbed".

I’m not familiar with any of this music at all. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it either. I do like the variety of instruments. All in all a good show Elorious. Thanks again for your hard work and knowledge

Diggin' along cowering from heat and blazing UV. I thought we had an ancient railway tunnel running under our porch. Turns out it was just a groundhog. No lights. No sound system. The Brockville one sounds much cooler!

PeterB! You are right. It would be cooler down there!
