SLY STONE was probably one of the most recognizable African American musicians of the late 1960's and early 1970's. He cofounded the band SLY & THE FAMILY STONE in 1966 which became a widely popular SOUL group with massive hits like "Dance To The Music" and "Family Affair". It is hard to underestimate just how extremely popular SLY & THE FAMILY STONE became in the late 1960's. Artists like STEVIE WONDER opened for SLY & THE FAMILY STONE at concerts. Some sources claim that a whole group of artists were greatly influenced by SLY & THE FAMILY STONE like MILES DAVIS and HERBIE HANCOCK.
SLY & THE FAMILY STONE released their fifth album in 1971 called 'There's A Riot Goin' On" which was mostly a dark FUNK album which has been identified by many sources as an important record in the creation of the contemporary AMERICAN FUNK sound that would dominate much of the American market for decades to follow. It was the first record to be released in the United States that used a Drum Machine. This was especially the case with the hit "Family Affair" which bluntly stunned competing producers all over the SOUL and emerging AMERICAN DISCO industry.
Unfortunately SLY STONE was being systematically destroyed by his addiction to hard recreational drugs. It would have a devastating effect on the rest of band which would eventually break up in 1976. STONE continued as a solo artist with three albums 'High On You' in 1975. It included the instrumental "Green Eyed Monster Girl" which many early dj's used in their sets to mix with certain DISCO songs. His second solo album released in 1979 was entitled 'Ten Years Too Soon'. It was really just a remix album of many SLY & THE FAMILY STONE classic songs "discofied" by the Boston dj, DISCO producer and remixer JOHN LUONGO for the AMERICAN DISCO market. It was something of a novelty in the DISCO market in various parts of the world. What is really significant about the 'Ten Years Too Soon' album is that it became one of the first "forced record pool products'. When record pools initially appeared in 1974 as a service where organizations of dj's would give specialty DISCO labels feedback when they would be supplied advance copies of records. They enabled those often small labels a tangible indication of the potential of new records in the clubs before the records were actually released to the public. As pools began to appear all over North America, the major labels began to dominate the scene supplying pools with product. Breaking with the original tradition of record pools, many of the major labels began to supply certain records which they wanted played in the discos with often very heavy handed intensions. Pools would be told that records like 'Ten Years Too Soon' had to be played by members of the pools if the pools didn't want to get cut off from the label in future dealings. This kind of behaviour began to become very common in the 1980's.
His third solo album was 'I'm Back! Family & Friends' which was released in 2011. Many of the musicians involved with the recording of it were major ROCK and FUNK musicians like JEFF BECK and CARMINE APPICE. All that and the album bombed!
We play "Sing A Simple Song" from the 'Ten Years Too Soon' album. We are also playing the single "Danse A La Musique" released by the band under the name THE FRENCH FRIES in 1968 for the European discotheque industry.

DOUGLAS MCCARTHY was one of the founding members of the ELECTRIC BODY MUSIC band called NITZER EBB. He was also the main vocalist; the voice that roared away in INDUSTRIAL discos all over Europe and North America in the 1980's. NITZER EBB was a stand out British ELECTRONIC band that started in 1982 and contributed to contribute wildly popular tracks well into the 1990's. The "Master Mix" of their 1990 song "Fun To Be Had" was mixed by the DUST BROTHERS (who actually are THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS.)

Many sources list ARIEL KALMA as a "French NEW-AGE composer and musician". Although such descriptions are not inaccurate, they fail to describe his full impact on popular music, especially in Mondo Disco. In the 1960's he contributed musical poetry and experimental music to various underground music event across Europe. Moving to India in the early 1970's, ARIEL KALMA studied INDIAN MUSIC and continued to release exotic AMBIENT albums. His 1975 album "Ariel" was used by SPACE MUSIC dj's and their AMBIENT SPACE counterparts in France and Italy, although it was difficult to find ARIEL KALMA material. His spacey "Manège" was often mixed with SPACE ART and HERMAN'S ROCKET tracks.
ARIEL KALMA was a gifted musician of vision who collaborated with dozens of amazing artists. His collaboration with HOUSE MUSIC producer and composer GILBERT COHEN was no exception bringing ARIAL KALMA music into the world of contemporary CHILL/AMBENT and FRENCH HOUSE.

As far I can tell. This show was the only radio show in North America that has done any kind of tribute to Ariel Kalma. Well done!
