QUINCY JONES (March 14, 1933 – November 3, 2024)
It would be almost an understatement to say that the late QUINCY JONES contributed greatly to the advancement of the Disco medium and music. QUINCY JONES & HIS BAND enjoyed tremendous success in 1962 with the jazz bossa nova instrumental "Soul Bossa Nova" that was played in discos throughout Europe and South America. It is still an instantly recognizable slice of international pop culture that is programmed in dance academies and schools everywhere.
Quincy Jones' influence on disco surely didn't stop there! With years of recording motion picture and television themes and soundtracks along with his own patient and generous Contemporary Jazz, Jazz Funk and Soul, QUINCY JONES was further celebrated as a production perfectionist. His collaborations with the likes of ASHFORD & SIMPSON, PATTI AUSTIN, MINNIE RIPERTON, BARRY WHITE, DONNA SUMMER, CHAKA KHAN, DIANA ROSS, RAY CHARLES, BILL COSBY, FRANK SINATRA and JAMES INGRAM are legendary. Classic examples include the motion picture soundtrack of "The Wiz" and his generous production of DONNA SUMMER'S emancipation of the remarkable JON & VANGELIS song "State Of Independence"!
QUINCY JONES may possibly be most remembered and studied for his monumental work with the late MICHAEL JACKSON. Many sources claim that the QUINCY JONES produced album "Off The Wall" was one of finest disco records of all time. Yet the one subject of awe is his production of JACKON'S "Thriller" album which would become one of the most popular records ever recorded. Some sources claim it sold over 65 million copies! QUINCY JONES managed to complement MICHAEL JACKSON'S genius with a product that became one of the most influential and powerful Disco records of all time. The effects of the "Thriller" album are still being felt in various parts of the planet after profoundly influencing Zouk and Bollywood artists just to identify two genres among hundreds!

QUINCY JONES provided music or produced the soundtracks of so many movies that many sources identify him as a soundtrack specialist. Some of the films he has provided music for include "Mirage", "The Pawnbroker" and "The Slender Thread" in 1965, "The Deadly Affair", "Walk, Don't Run" and "Enter Laughing" in 1966, "Banning", "In Cold Blood" and "In The Heat Of The Night" in 1967, "For The Love Of Ivy" in 1968, "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice", "Mackenna's Gold", "The Italian Job", "Cactus Flower" and "The Lost Man" in 1969, "Last Of the Mobile Hot Shots", "john & Mary", "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" and "The Adventurers" in 1970, "$" in 1971, "The Hot Rock" in 1972, and the "The Wiz" in 1978. There is no way we could play selections from all of those soundtracks on a 2 hour show.

QUINCY JONES was responsible to three memorable TV show themes:
The police drama "Ironisde" started each episode in the late 1960's and early 1970's with the arresting introduction of QUINCY JONES' theme music serving as the show's very first impression. Those musical moments were also used as the "iron fist" theme on the 1972 film "Five Fingers Of Death" also known as "King Boxer" which starred the pre-Bruce Lee martial arts star LO LIEH. Many sources claim "Five Fingers Of Death" is considered to be the movie that started the whole North American 'kung fu" film craze of the 1970's. And many years later, director Quentin Tarantino paid homage to this film using the same snippet to signal fights in "Kill Bill". So here's where cop shows and martial arts films meet with unforgettable QUINCY JONES musical moments. We are featuring the whole 4 minute composition. QUINCY JONES produced "Hicky Burr" which was somewhat popular as the theme music for the American sitcom "The Cosby Show". Recorded with BILL COSBY, we offer a remix later on in the show. By far the most popular and unforgettable television theme song from QUINCY JONES was "The Streetbeater" which was the funky theme for the 1972 U.S. sitcom "Sanford And Son". Many sources hail the "Sanford And Son" theme to be one of the most representative sounds of the early 1970's. |

QUINCY JONES PRODUCING MICHAEL JACKSON
______________________________________ The SOUL artist from the past that did the best in the early 1980's was MICHAEL JACKSON. He was the lead singer for the JACKSON FIVE who would become THE JACKSONS. With those groups he would emerge as one of the most popular and intriguing artists of the 1970's. Even back in the late 1960's during the days of the JACKSON FIVE, MICHAEL JACKSON released some solo efforts. In 1979 and 1982 he would release two albums produced by QUINCY JONES that would do more than completely solidify his solo career. The first album, released in 1979, was OFF THE WALL (LP) which was very successful with unforgettable disco hits like "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Rock With You". The second album, released in 1982, was a work of genius that had a profound effect on discotheque music and popular culture everywhere. Some sources suggest that such a profound effect is still being felt today. As a popular discotheque record it did something that simply hadn't been done before. It was theatrical and intense on level never seen before. The 1980's was a period when the 'music video' had really become a powerful tool for music promotion. MICHAEL JACKSON even pushed that medium to new extremes with the title track "Thriller". He released a lengthy music video that functioned like a short film, directed by JOHN LANDIS. It was a crazy horror flick that concluded with a dance routine, complete with dancing zombies. It created an obsession that was as contagious as much it was intriguing for tens of millions. Many sources have suggested that the "Thriller" video's effect was to double the album's sales. Our understanding is that the THRILLER (LP) is still best-selling album in history. More than any other record, THRILLER (LP) made MICHAEL JACKSON one of the most popular artists in the world. He was called 'the King Of Pop". Literally hundreds of dance troupes around the world still emulate the dance routines and music of MICHAEL JACKSON's "Thriller" video for an exhausting variety of good causes and charities. People just can't forget that magnetic video. In terms of it's effect of disco music, the most important song on the THRILLER (LP) was "Billie Jean". It had a slick continuous beat-structure that, although it had all of the sophistication of good EURODISCO beat-structure, was completely unique to itself. It was current and delicious. It could be easily mixed with many other records at the time, but it functioned like living entity that gave the whole recording a randy undercurrent. For many other producers it was a highly successful example of a total new way of packaging their music. The production of "Billie Jean" would have a tremendous amount of influence of many future Chicago HOUSE MUSIC and American FREESTYLE artists and producers. |
