SLURP SHOW (Rolling along abandoned emotional tracks in a route from 1966 to 1973; originally closed and shuttered.)
Disc jockeys in various American and British discotheques, bars and dancehalls in the last few years of the 1960's and the very early 1970's had their own sounds and plenty of useful and popular club hits to draw from. Extremely few remember the emerging industry with it's vibrant underground market. They would often buy their music on 7" singles at stores like those in Montreal and New York City that sold FUNK and SOUL selections along with the latest REGGAE and DUB tracks from Jamaica. This is not just a "FUNK and SOUL" show. There is also Psychedelic music, BOOGALOO, early DISCO and oddities like the legendary 7-Eleven record.
There was a majority of deejays in Discos that played this fun Soul sound starting around 1966. It had it's own distinctiveness and sense of cultural identity that dancers throughout North America and The United Kingdom were addicted to, just as dancers would become addicted to the sounds of Electro and Hip Hop in future years. This "Soul" sound offered marvellous early Disco tracks and Funk recorded expressly for discotheque programming. These artists were loved by a buying public that heard them in the clubs. They may not have been as popular as the megastars of the day like JAMES BROWN, ARETHA FRANKLIN, SLY STONE or THE SUPREMES. Yet the previously mentioned artists and their other 'a-list' competitors didn't always have fresh music to offer to a growing discotheque industry. Many of the artists featured in this show helped feel the void. This is just a small sample of the hundreds of records that deejays in the late 1960's depended upon to keep their dance floors full.
The massive impact of MANU DIBANGO's "Soul Makossa" and the growing influence of emerging Sophisticated Soul artists like THE OJAYS, THE THREE DEGREES, ISAAC HAYES and BARRY WHITE began to weaken the pull of this sound in 1973.
Two groups of deejays have been known for insisting upon keeping this sound alive after 1973. In various parts of The United Kingdom some establishments still maintained the Northern Soul movement concentrating on SOUL records from that period. Many of these recordings were extremely popular to dancers in the Northern Soul scene. Artists like Chicago's C.O.D.'s eventually broke up not knowing that their songs like "She's Fire" from 1966 were extremely popular in Northern Soul establishments on the other side of the pond. There is still a sizeable crowd in the U.K, and Europe that continue the movement today!
In the 1980's, 1990's and 21st century many HIP HOP producers and BREAKS deejays accessed records from this period for 'funky material'. It has become popular now to call it 'OLDSCHOOL BREAKS' or 'FUNKY BREAKS'. Because of demand from a growing number of such deejays, some of the titles we feature here are extremely expensive to buy now.
The photograph supplied with the playlist is the original cover for the "Dance The Slurp" which was released in 1967 and 1970 for promotional distribution in 7-Eleven stores. Written by Dallas jingle producer TOM MERRIMAN for 7-ELEVEN stores in the United States. It became so popular that some commercial "hit" radio stations played it. Many Breaks deejays in Western United States started mixing it up in the 1990's. The most popular and controversial employment of "Dance The Slurp" was with the BRAINFREEZE mix by DJ SHADOW & CUT CHEMIST in 1999. |

Not all singers and musicians that worked at Motown became gigantic successes there like THE SUPREMES, STEVIE WONDER or THE TEMPTATIONS. We are featuring two examples:
SIXTO RODRIGUEZ was a studio musician there who pursued his own career. A rich song writer, he would eventually record material with artists like future AMERICAN DISCO producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. The song "Sugar Man" from his first LP Cold Fact was mixed with psychedelic SOUL by some Detroit deejays. RODRIGUEZ would actually find his greatest success in South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH was not one of the big successes at Motown. They did really well with the psychedelic SOUL song "Smiling Faces Sometimes" in 1971 |

ODETTA rarely did FUNK or SOUL music. She was known for her FOLK music. Her full name was ODETTA FELIOUS HOLMES and her career as a singer, musician and song writer made her an important figure in the revival of the folk music scene in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1970, she tried SOUL music! Lucky us! |

WILLIE TEE is actually WILSON TURBINTON, a notable New Orleans FUNK innovator who was a member of the internationally admired NEW ORLEANS FUNK group THE WILD MAGNOLIAS. His dreamy 1972 SOUL single "Teasing You Again" spread to discotheques throughout North America and The United Kingdom like wild fire! This is a record that was so difficult to find in the early 21st Century that the British 'Grapevine 2000' label reissued it twice in 2003, trying to keep up with demand! |

For deejays and discotheques all over the United States and United Kingdom in the late 1960's, EDDIE BO was the man!
He was the voice! He made the sound! Millions danced to his records and fell in love with his personable and down-to-earth vocal style! He was EDWIN JOSEPH BOCAGE (September 20, 1930 – March 18, 2009), an extremely active New Orleans powerhouse of songs and grooves that touched various generations of dancers. We only have two hours and we are only spinning five of his hits. |

LYN COLLINS had a massive hit with the James Brown-produced gospel-style song "Think (About It)" in 1972. 'Think (About It) contains five breaks which have been widely sampled in HIP HOP, HIP HOUSE, BREAKS, GABBER, and DRUM & BASS records throughout the late 1980's and 1990's. The most memorable example is where the portions of the song that say "Yeah! Woo!" and "It takes two to make a thing go right" loop in ROB BASE and DJ E-Z ROCK'S "It Takes Two" from 1988 which is composed from samples of "Think (About It)" including lines of Collins' vocals. We used to play it often here on THE GROOVE back in the late 1980's! This is one of dozens of examples where these SOUL records from the 1960's and early 1970's still matter out there! They have been used and sampled by producers putting this early sound back into the public mainstream. |

The HARVEY AVERNE BARRIO BAND was one of HARVEY AVERNE's many groups. In this instant it was a marvellous BOOGALOO mix of FUNK, ROCK and LATIN FUSION that deejays found various needs answered from which. HARVEY AVERNE was a major LATIN and DISCO producer and label owner who contributed greatly to various sounds for various markets. His contribution was unique yet immeasurable. |
