A search for Heroes part 1 💲 An offering of some favourites from the 1970's and early 1980's for the heroes who have taken the time in past years to donate to the THE GROOVE. In these difficult times we need to hear from you again!

(Photograph is of LA DISCO VIVA on St. Joseph Blvd, in what is now Gatineau. Taken in the 1970's, one can see the original sign of LA CABARET. That establishment was initially called that. I was fortunate enough to go to both incarnations of the disco. ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No other single disco show in the world plays the incredible variety of Disco that THE GROOVE plays. This show is a dedication to the unending power and potential of the music, regardless of whether it was recorded in 1970, 1976, or yesterday morning. When you donate to THE GROOVE, you donate to the whole phenomenal radio station which is teaming with talented announcers who are just as passionate about music.
I have always thought that CARL CARLTON's widely popular version of "Everlasting Love" was the best example of romantic disco!
It was humorous watching deejays and record distributors throughout the 1970's and early 1980's frantically searching for a copy of the legendary "limited edition extended mix" of CARL CARLTON's "Everlasting Love". It never existed!
EVERLASTING LOVE
CARL CARLTON - EVERLASTING LOVE (LP) - ABC
W. MICHAEL LEWIS and LAURIN RINDER produced a wide selection of amazing American Disco gems both under names like EL COCO and LA PAMPELOUSE and also under their own names. They were responsible for great tracks like "Mondo Disco" and incredible albums like 'SEVEN DEADLY SINS'. Their 1979 version of the EL COCO track "Cocomotion" is my favourite.
COCOMOTION (PART 2)
EL COCO - COCOMOTION (LP) - AVI
COCOMOTION '79
EL COCO - SPACED OUT (2LP) - DISORIENT
ALEC R. COSTANDINOS was responsible for various amazing Eurodisco records. His influence is still being felt today! My personal favourite of his productions is the PARIS CONNECTION version of "Eloise".
ELOISE
PARIS CONNECTION - 16e.ARRt. (LP) - RCA
AMADEO was the crazy Filipino expatriate who put on raunchy discotheque shows in Paris. I loved his alluring "Moving Like A Superstar".
MOVING LIKE A SUPERSTAR
AMADEO - 12" - DISQUES IBACH/ELVER
American Eurodisco producer SIMON SOUSSAN produced several uptempo hits in the late 1970's including THE SIMON ORCHESTRA. I always loved his "I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten" from the second SIMON ORCHESTRA album. It was re-issued in the 1980's by the famous Passion label.
I CLOSE MY EYES AND COUNT TO TEN
THE SIMON ORCHESTRA - 12" - PASSION
CERRONE was called the "King of Disco" after the success of "Love In C Minor" which he recorded with ALEC R. COSTANDINOS. His career continued with dozens of classics. He is still active today! I'm passionate about numerous CERRONE recordings, yet my favourite is his "Africanism" under the name KONGAS.
AFRICANISM
CERRONE - AFRICANISM (LP) - CROCOS
The Dutch Eurodisco group AMERICAN GYPSY" released a scorcher in 1979 inspired by the Thomas Anthony Harris bestseller 'self help' book "I'm O.K., You're O.K.". I could never get enough of the clean production and energy!
I'M OK, YOU'RE OK
AMERICAN GYPSY - 12" - IMPORTE/12
SANTA ESMERALDA is one of the most popular and successful Eurodisco bands. I have spoken often of the significance and world popularity of their cover version of the jazz song "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". It, like many of the SANTA ESMERALDA records is brilliant. Their latin influenced sound was so infectious that it spawned a sub movement of 'Santa Esmeralda Style' records. My favourite is the 1979 song "Another Cha-Cha". I can't get enough of the energy!
As I said in the "Real History Of Disco" - "Another Cha-Cha" fused a combination of SALSA and Cuban CHA CHA CHA wrapped tightly around an uptempo EURODISCO structure like a wildly successful scientific experiment."
ANOTHER CHA-CHA + CHA-CHA SUITE
SANTA ESMERALDA (starring JIMMY GOINGS) - ANOTHER CHA-CHA (LP) - FOREIGN EXCHANGE
French Eurodisco band AMERICAN EAGLES offered an infectious 'Santa Esmeralda Style' record in 1977 that featured male vocals. I was enchanted by the romantic tones.
AMORE AMORE
AMERICAN EAGLES - KOKKA (LP) - CARRERE
Once called the UNIVERSAL ROBOT BAND, the American group KLEEER emerged in the late 1970's as Funky Disco band enjoying a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean largely due to the popularity of the song "Keep Your Body Workin'". I really tug their other hit "Get Tough". It was smart Funky Disco complete with John Wayne samples!
GET TOUGH
KLEEER - LICENSE TO DREAM (LP) - ATLANTIC
The whole first album by CHANGE is brilliant and extremely important!
It is the song "Angel In My Pocket" which is my personal favourite!
ANGEL IN MY POCKET
