In 1976 and early 1977 many pleasant looking young ladies going to discos like Montreal's 5440, Vanier's In Spot and La Disco Viva in Hull began wearing stylistic scarves when they went out to dance and mingle. I guess it was the fashionable thing to do then. Some of the true disco ladies surviving from that period still like wearing scarfs! They'll use any excuse to put on a scarf.
