T E K N O B R A T On a sunny Saturday afternoon in 1984, a young teenager with a French accent wandered into the studio here at CKCU and introduced himself to me as I hosted and produced an episode of The Groove. He was intensely interested in the Hip Hop I was programming. As he sat listening to and commenting on the freshly imported 12" singles I was playing, I could see in him tremendous potential, talent and a contagious passion for the music. I would soon begin to mentor him, as I had done so for many others before. What was unique about him was that the relationship would last for decades. In fact it is stronger than ever today. He would eventually start calling himself 'Teknobrat', becoming a popular rave dj, and producing his own records. We would have recordings released by various labels in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, France and Germany. He'd have dj gigs at Raves, Music Festivals and Discos across Canada, the U.S., and almost every country in Europe. He also revolutionized radio in Ottawa with his now legendary CKCU show "Planet Rave" by addicting the public to aggressively mixed underground disco genres starting a tradition of late night counter culture dj shows still carried on by the likes of "The Deep Blue", "The Docking Station" and "The Mix" here on CKCU. On other stations like CHIN and CHUO comparable shows have offered the public House Music and PsyTrance. The effects of "Planet Rave" are still being felt today. Words really cannot capture how terribly proud I am of Teknobrat's many accomplishments. This episode of The Groove features recordings Teknobrat composed and produced.
