John, re bulbs, what I heard is that earlier planting allows the bulbs to put out roots (& perhaps the beginning of a tip) before going winter-dormant; they are then in a better condition to sprout, even under the snow, come the Spring. (I'm guessing you probably 'lose' fewer of them that way.)

Re bulbs still, I suspect we had an 'easy winter' as far as below ground goes: no real deep freeze, yet we kept an ever-increasing blanket of snow (except for one tiny melt, long ago). In other words, bulby things and perennial roots had it easy. I've found them growing heartily even when it got to snowing a little again, and we were wondering if it would ever STOP, geez.
