Coltrane's soooo atonal, he is, was, unique, but it seems to me that if he hadn't existed, someone else would have come up to explore and exploit all them weird chord progressions. As though it was a necessary stage in the evolution(s) of jazz. (This deep thought brought to you by...)

I don't think they've ever seen official release, but one can find on the internet some quality live recordings from the brief 01973 tour by Santana & McLaughlin... and they make the Love Devotion Surrender album seem like a mellow chill-out by comparison. Fierce and ferocious.
