I like old words like Cumbria. We often overlook the fact it's, for instance, Cumber Land, Engle Land (tho could be Angle), Eire Land, and so on...

Another thing is "hidden French" in English. We're familiar with Mc-, Mac- and M'- meaning "son of" (ex. MacDonald), and it's apparently the same with the first part of, ex., Fitzgibbons. t means "son of Gibbons" (fils Gibbons), "fils" meaning "son" when you don't pronounce the L at all (feess).
