In 1996, the National Institute of Jamaican-Canadians celebrated the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Maroons in Nova Scotia.
Karl Gordon, the Jamaican-born poet, playwright and actor, was asked by the founding trustees of the institute to write something to mark their celebration of this historic event.
Excerpts of his choral narrative, The Maroon Story: A Proud Heritage, were read at the celebratory banquet on 21 July 1996.
