Thursday April 12th, 2018 with (I’m not) Janis Lockwood—I’m Shelley Ann Morris
From Our Own Back Yard and a Bit Beyond......Durham County Poets, Rob Lutes and Ottawa Grasssroots Festival
On today’s show, Shelley Ann will present an interview with Kevin Harvey of Durham County Poets. They will be playing at the Blacksheep Inn. Rob Lutes’ music will also be featured as he is coming to the NAC’s Fourth Stage on Friday April 27. There will also be a selection of music from the many good ‘folks’ who are involved with the Ottawa Grassroots Festival. So mush music, so little time!
Rob Lutes
APPEARING AT THE NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE - FOURTH STAGE, OTTAWA
Friday, April 27, 2018 | 8:30 pm | $15
"For folk roots with a blues foundation, I don’t think it can get much better than Rob Lutes and Walk in the Dark" - Donald Teplyske, Fervor Coulee
“Rob Lutes will soon be counted amongst the ranks of the best in the industry. Insightful and meaty… gutty and gritty.. A rare talent that keeps getting better with each project released, one listen will prove he is more than a passing fancy; this guy is here to stay”- Matt Large, Montreal Folk Festival
‟Lutes is a fine roots/blues writer, one of those gems you find by chance as you're going through a town and he's going through a town and you just want a beer and he gives you the show of the year.” - Bob Mersereau, CBC.ca
Once you’ve heard Lutes in performance, you don’t forget it. The abundant and easy-flowing energy in his music matches his ease on-stage. You feel like you’re the only one in the room when he’s talking to you, whether it’s between songs or through his lyrics. Then there’s his masterful guitar picking too. You’re going to tell everyone who missed this show that they need to be a part of it with you next time around.
Accompanied by celebrated Quebec guitarist Rob McDonald, Lutes will be sharing songs from his seventh album, Walk in the Dark, plus fan favourites from his deep catalogue. A double Maple Blues Award nominee as Acoustic Act and Songwriter of the Year in 2017, Lutes will do what he has done for years: kick up a little dust, wade into some deep waters and tackle the realities of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style. You’ll experience Lutes’ unmistakable voice and literary writing style, situated at the intersection of the blues, folk, Americana and contemporary singer-songwriter genres.
For his first appearance at the NAC, Lutes has invited fellow Montreal duo Sin and Swoon to open the show. Sin and Swoon are Ottawa valley native Michael James O’Brien and Antigonish, Nova Scotia’s Michelle Tompkins. They love George and Tammy, old time country music, and the harmony singing of the Louvin Brothers and the Delmore Brothers
“The duo…write sinfully sweet old-timey tunes that make you swoon.” – Sarah Towle, Exclaim
