Ukrainian Canadian celebration with guests Natalia Telentso and Eli Camilo of Dumai Dunai and Murmurosi; Ukrainian Canadian legend Lubomyr Melnyk's new album!
Today I am joined by two Montreal-based musicians, Natalia Telentso and Eli Camilo who have collaborated on several Ukrainian-Balkan-Slavic based bands out of Montreal, including Murmurosi, a Ukrainian-folk oriented quartet, and Dumai Dunai, which they term a "Slavic-dub-punk" band. They both sing (in Ukrainian, English, Serbian, Polish, Spanish, Macedonian, and Romani) and Eli plays trumpet and other instruments. They are appearing in Ottawa this Saturday with Dumai Dunai at the always fun House of Targ! Their music bleeds passion, melancholy, and joy with Natalia's searing voice and Eli's trumpet. This will be a party!

| Been meaning to get to this new album, a double LP from Analog Africa with the Zig Zag Band, a wonderful Zimbabwean band who played their own, original, style, different from the Chimurenga music of Thomas Mapfumo, a style called Chigiyo, named after a popular dance from their hometown. They also had other influences, like Reggae in this song, and I've been wanting to play this classic from Toots & The Maytals for a long time. One of the best things about Canada, is that a set with a Ukrainian-based band can lead effortlessly into Reggae! |

| The incomparable, peerless artist Lubomyr Melnyk has a new album, with one of his longest pieces recorded in several decades. "Windmills" is a 45 minute pianistic dream recorded in Latvia. What new superlatives can I use to describe his music? His music is completely unique, composing and performing it since the mid 70's in almost complete obscurity, he has finally found his audience in the past 15 years, often playing sold out shows throughout Europe. Since Russia's 2022 invasion, he has been a fervent champion and defender of Ukrainian culture. This new piece, unusually, begins with a lengthy section in the lower half of the keyboard, and slowly ascends to transcendent glory over 45 minutes. Listening to this music, you are in the presence of divinity.
