Jugalbandi with Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan; an Angolan journey; a rare Chopin recital from the Old World.

Today we will hear a Jugalbandi with Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan from 1964, an Angolan journey centered around Analog Africa's wonderful compilation "Angolan Soundtrack 2" which I have been listening to this past week, and a Chopin recital from the Old World with Polish pianist Raoul von Koczalski.

Analog Africa has two fantastic compilations of Angolan music from the late 60's to the late 70's, when private record companies all eventually closed a few years after the start of the post-independence Angolan civil war. The range of the music is incredible, with Congolese and Cabo Verdean influences mixed with music derived from local traditions. These were released in 2010 and 2013, but I have not featured the second volume on my show before.

Raoul von Koczalski was a Polish pianist and prodigy, born in 1884, who studied intensively as a child with Karol Mikuli, one of Chopin's most accomplished students. He was a celebrated performer of Chopin's music in the 1920's and 30's, particularly in Germany. In the 1930's he was seen (ironically in hindsight) as a representative of Polish culture in the Third Reich and supported by the Polish government. He had even begun a project recording all of Chopin's works for Deutsche Grammophon in 1939, which was interrupted by the war. He was interned in Germany during the war and did not appear again in recording until just after it ended. This Chopin recital features recordings he made during three live radio broadcasts from Berlin in 1945 and 1948, from the Soviet, American, and British occupied zones. His Chopin displays many archaic 19th century characteristics of piano playing, which were already rare in his lifetime. They also show a freedom and beauty in playing which are exceedingly rare in our lifetimes!

This gorgeous solo kora piece by Ballake Sissoko reminds me so much of "Laban" by Salif Keita (from his 2005 album "M'Bemba"), one of my favourites by Keita, we hear the recent acoustic version once again!

Hey Dave. I am not sure if I had told you how much I appreciate the background and history related to the artists and musical styles that you present and introduce me to. It adds texture to the show that I appreciate. Thanks, man

Thanks, I always have an internal debate sometimes thinking I don't give enough information or sometimes thinking I give too much! Both these small independent labels are labours of love from individuals (Samy Ben Redjeb for Analog Africa and Ward Marston for Marston Records). Both release albums with exhaustive liner notes filled with essays and information. They are also similar in that they focus on "rescuing" unknown and lost recordings from bygone eras. Of course with very different musical focus!

To be clear, it is the second half of "Nan Sira Madi" and "Laban" which sound extremely similar, it can't be a coincidence!
