Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman; Arooj Aftab; Bach; John Zorn
Since Zakir Hussain's death in December, I have been listening to many of his recordings and will feature some of my favourites we have not heard for a while. Today we will hear a fantastic live performance with the Carnatic violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman. He is joined by his son and daughter, Lalgudi Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, on violins, Vellore Ramabhadran on mridangam, and Zakir Hussain on tabla. They perform a full Kriti in Raga Mohanam. Since both Carnatic mridangam and Hindustani tabla are represented, Vellore and Zakir both do solos, culminating in an extensive duet leading to the final cadence. This concert was recorded live at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, 1994.

In March, I saw Derek Gripper, a huge aficionado of Indian classical music, and he talked about the classical musicians he had worked with and listen to, He said he was always astonished by the unbelievable heights of virtuosity and musicianship they attain, particularly the musicians who grew up in the traditional setting, spending hours and hours each day learning and practicing from a very young age (as all the musicians we just heard did). This would always make Derek Gripper, an accomplished musician in his own right, feel very inadequate. His most successful response, to feel validated as a musician, was to play Bach. We start this next set with the crown jewel of the 1st book of the Well-Tempered Clavier, the concluding Prelude and Fugue in b minor. There are many paths to musical Nirvana, and we take as many as we can on my show. |

Looking at the Jazz Festival lineup, one name leapt out of the screen, Arooj Aftab. The almost unclassifiable Pakistani singer is appearing at the Jazz festival on June 25th.

You are like me, David. I will always go to the live performances first. That's why I have so many live concert DVDs and am a huge fan of Austin City Limits. It was a real delight to finally meet in person on Saturday (although I always expected it would be out walking the dogs). Wish they were with you at Tooth and Nail, however, it was so good to see you. Wish Drake still had the legs for long Westboro / Hintonburg walks. Sounds like Harbourfront Centre has great acoustics; never been there.
