Thursday June 5th, 2025 with David Dalle
Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman; Arooj Aftab; Bach; John Zorn

Since Zakir Hussain's death in December, I have been listening to many of his recordings and will feature some of my favourites we have not heard for a while. Today we will hear a fantastic live performance with the Carnatic violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman. He is joined by his son and daughter, Lalgudi Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, on violins, Vellore Ramabhadran on mridangam, and Zakir Hussain on tabla. They perform a full Kriti in Raga Mohanam. Since both Carnatic mridangam and Hindustani tabla are represented, Vellore and Zakir both do solos, culminating in an extensive duet leading to the final cadence. This concert was recorded live at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, 1994.

In March, I saw Derek Gripper, a huge aficionado of Indian classical music, and he talked about the classical musicians he had worked with and listen to, He said he was always astonished by the unbelievable heights of virtuosity and musicianship they attain, particularly the musicians who grew up in the traditional setting, spending hours and hours each day learning and practicing from a very young age (as all the musicians we just heard did). This would always make Derek Gripper, an accomplished musician in his own right, feel very inadequate. His most successful response, to feel validated as a musician, was to play Bach. We start this next set with the crown jewel of the 1st book of the Well-Tempered Clavier, the concluding Prelude and Fugue in b minor. There are many paths to musical Nirvana, and we take as many as we can on my show.

Looking at the Jazz Festival lineup, one name leapt out of the screen, Arooj Aftab. The almost unclassifiable Pakistani singer is appearing at the Jazz festival on June 25th.

You are like me, David. I will always go to the live performances first. That's why I have so many live concert DVDs and am a huge fan of Austin City Limits. It was a real delight to finally meet in person on Saturday (although I always expected it would be out walking the dogs). Wish they were with you at Tooth and Nail, however, it was so good to see you. Wish Drake still had the legs for long Westboro / Hintonburg walks. Sounds like Harbourfront Centre has great acoustics; never been there.

Oh and these Moment Records (Zakir's own label) was great for concert recordings. Most of them are live, with minimal mics and no editing.

Very cool ! Nice to have your own label. And sorry I left but Drake was in the car a long time so I had to get him home. I had been hoping for patio weather so everyone could meet him. He loves "holding court" with lots of people. However, when Jeff and I had him out there for folks to come and say hi, he was totally distracted checking out all the "cards and letters" from his brethren in Hintonburg aka Doggyville hahaha. It was just too cold for folks to come outside. Hey, maybe you can solve a mystery for me. David Cavlovic told me you both work in the same building, but did not mention the building. In case I am ever in the area, I can drop you guys off coffee lol.

Sure wish i coulda made it to the T&N thing! Even though i live literally 1.5 blocks away (T&N brewery industrial entrance is on the alley that runs behind our house). Too much "interesting" life going on... Would have been dandy to put some faces to names/personas. Seems a good time was had!

And I find myself thinking a lot about Janis Lockwood today, eclectic host of manymanymany years who used to hand off with this program, among soooo many other things community and CKCU. A truly wonderful soul. She left this earth 5 years ago today. Peace, Sister Janis, now on another astral plane..
