More Record Store Day treasures with never-before-released Charles Mingus live in Buenos Aires! Quatuor Bozzini with Jurg Frey. Some Bikutsi from Awesome Tapes From Africa. Mahler.
Today I will be sharing another wonderful treasure I picked up from the recent Record Store Day, a 3-lp set from two concerts Charles Mingus gave in Buenos Aires on June 2nd and 3rd, 1977. These recordings have never been released before. His 1977 South American tour featured Mingus leading a quintet with Ricky Ford, tenor sax, Jack Walrath, trumpet, Robert Neloms, piano, Dannie Richmond, drums, and of course, Mingus on bass. They perform a selection from Mingus' rich repertoire of compositions, with superb playing and solos throughout. I am amazed by the richness and fullness of sound Mingus and his group achieve, particularly from the brass, only a sax and trumpet but at times you'd think there is a full brass section. Delicious, wonderful music!
We will hear just the first lp of three, and I am sure the other two will feature on future programs!

I wanted to play some Columbian music in this set, and took out this great Analog Africa compilation. Listening to the first track on the second disc, I thought "this one!", then the second "no, this one!", then the third "has to be this one!", then the fourth and I gave up, we will hear all four tracks. |

Gibraltar Drakus from his debut 1989 album. Bikutsi music exploded in popularity in Cameroon in the 80's, it was based on traditional balafon music, but played on electric guitars with mutes on the strings, imitating the intricate rhythms and melodic patterns of the balafons. |

From the really rich and thick textures of live Mingus to the extremely sparse, quiet textures of Swiss composer Jürg Frey. He joined the Wandelweiser composer collective in 1993 a year after its founding. These composers and musicians write and perform experimental music and take John Cage as their main inspiration. Canada's premiere new music string quartet, Montreal's Quatuor Bozzini, led by sisters, violist Stéphanie Bozzini and cellist Isabelle Bozzini, has performed and recorded a number of pieces by Frey, including his haunting and gorgeous 2nd String Quartet. This half hour work is described by Alex Ross as like a “Mahler Adagio suspended in zero gravity”. They initially recorded this piece in 2004 for Wandelweiser's music label, but has been out of print for years and just recently reissued on Quatuor Bozzini's own label "CollectionQB".

Today, the Royal Concertgebouw's Mahler Festival began in Amsterdam. Sigh... I was booked to go to their 2020 Mahler Festival, but we all remember how 2020 turned out. This did lead me to attending the 2023 Gwendhaus Mahler Festival in Leipzig, and that was the trip of a lifetime! I would have love to repeated that extraordinary experience in Amsterdam. Maybe in another life... As a companion to the Frey string quartet, we hear the opening Adagio from Mahler's unfinished 10th symphony. Only the Adagio was fully finished and orchestrated by Mahler before he died. The 10th symphony has been completed very successfully by Deryck Cooke and has been recorded and performed, but many conductors such as Bernstein and Pierre Boulez, only performed the opening Adagio. |
