Recent Record Store Day finds with Freddie Hubbard live at the Blue Morocco. John Zorn's complete string quartets part I. Brazilian, Jewish, Guinean music. Derek Gripper.
Featuring a wide mix of music today, starting off with a new release of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard "On Fire: Live From The Blue Morocco". These recordings of Freddie Hubbard and his working band have never been released before. The Blue Morocco was a jazz club in the Bronx during the 60's which featured a lot of jazz masters. Freddie Hubbard performed there on April 10, 1967 with Bennie Maupin, tenor sax, Kenny Barron, piano, Herbie Lewis, bass, Freddie Waits, drums, and Hubbard on trumpet of course. The set was about half his compositions and the other half by his bandmates, or standards, including an amazing 24 minute performance of "Bye Bye Blackbird" which we will hear today along with a couple of Hubbard's compositions. Hubbard recorded many albums in the 60's as leader, but all of them were studio recordings. This is a rare treasure of Hubbard performing live at the height of his ability.

The JACK Quartet has surprised me with a fabulous, unexpected release. John Zorn's complete string quartets on Zorn's own label Tzadik Records. A recording of all eight quartets performed by the leading new music String Quartet today is a dream! Zorn's eight string quartets were composed over 30 years starting with his first in 1988 and his eighth in 2017. Zorn writes that the eighth is likely his last quartet, but more would not be surprising from this staggeringly prolific composer. We will hear all eight quartets over the course of eight different programs. Today we hear his first: "Cat O'Nine Tails". This 13 minute work is an incredible musical montage, described by Zorn as "a freewheeling tribute to many of my musical heroes". |

Clarinetist Sam Sadigursky has been fascinated by the ruins of the Borscht Belt, the area of the Catskills in New York which was the location of numerous summer resorts catering to the Jewish community from 1900 to the late 60's, most famously depicted in the film "Dirty Dancing". He has just released his 4th and 5th albums with pieces inspired by the rise and fall of the Borscht Belt, all with his collaborator, accordeonist Nathan Koci. In Sadigursky's description the "resulting music intimately fuses sounds of Jewish spiritual and Klezmer music along with classical influences, middle-eastern rhythms, jazz improvisation, and tinges of Americana."
