Benin's Gnonnas Pedro; Boulez and Ballet: Ravel.

Today we'll be looking at a terrific new release by Analog Africa. A 2-lp look at the Beninese musician Gnonnas Pedro. In the mid 1960's Gnonnas Pedro made a popular music based on the ancestral funeral Agbadja rhythm from his region of Benin. He called this "Agbadja Moderne". He recorded for several Nigerian labels in the 70's, and, in 1980, he started his own label. His first release on his own label was a huge hit in Benin. This new compilation features selections from 1974-1983, recorded with his Dadjes Band. Gnonnas Pedro and his Dadjes Band were famous for being able to sing in multiple West African languages, as well as French, in addition to being able to play in many styles. They were often called "The Band That Speaks All African Languages". We will start with a few of the songs from this superb compilation which shows their broad range.

In March, we will be hearing music conducted by Pierre Boulez every week. Boulez was born on March 26 1925 and he conducted an enormous range of mostly 20th century music, as well as being one of the leading modernist composers of the post-war II era. We will also hear a lot of music by Ravel and Bartok, who are also celebrating anniversaries this year, and all conducted by Boulez. This week, we will hear my favourite work by Maurice Ravel, his ballet "Daphnis et Chloé". This ballet was commissioned in 1909 by Sergei Diagheliv for his legendary Paris-based Ballet Russes (famous for introducing Stravinsky to the world and his ballets "The Firebird", "Petrushka", and most famously "Rite of Spring" in 1913). The work was not completed until 1912 and premiered that year. It simply contains Ravel's most ravishing, rich, and beautiful music!

Benin is where it all started really for Analog Africa, in 2005 with Samy Ben Redjeb's first trip to Cotonou, Benin. It is suprising it took 20 years for him to release a full album of Gnonnas Pedro.

Aaaaaaaaah! Daphnis et Chloe!!! One of my very first loves!!! I remember my théâtre teacher in 9th grade was in the choir with the Montréal Symphony, and I was really impressed with that, and the oeuvre..

We (me and the cats - and the birds!) are listening on the porch basking in the with only wind in the trees and snow melting... if Bach is God, then Daphnis & Chloe is heaven :)!
