Latest from Niger's premiere Tuareg wedding band Etran de L'Aïr; two cellists and Ukrainian sadness and joy!

Etran de L'Aïr is the oldest Tuareg wedding band from Agadez, the Tuareg capital of Niger. They are formed by three brothers, Moussa, Abdoulaye, and Abdourahamane Ibrahim, who are all masters of Saharan guitar. They are joined by Alghabid Ghabdouan on drums. They have released two previous albums on Sahel Sounds, both recorded on location in Agadez, as well an exclusive EP for the Sahel Sounds Whatsapp collection and a live EP from a concert in Seattle. They have just released their third album, "100% Sahara Guitar", their first recorded in a studio. They took advantage of studio recording to weave in multiple layers of guitar and reverb. I had a bit of trepidation as I general lean towards raw, live recording, but this album absolutely rocks!

I just saw this poster as I walked into Nideyinan on the way to the CKCU studio today. The Pakistani Student Associations of Carleton and U of O are hosting a Qawwali night with Shahid Ali Khan this Saturday! I am not familiar with him, but he studied and performed with Nusrat and has lived in Canada for a while. I found a video of him performing Allah Hu a year ago.

The second half of today's show will feature two cellists in two cello concertos. The first is from Canadian cellist India Gailey and her concerto "Butterfly Lightning Shakes The Earth". It will be preceded by a set of solo cello miniatures entitled "Mountainweeps". Both these works were inspired by mountains, her Buddhist background and humanity's fragile and fraught relationship with nature. Beautiful works in which I hear hints of Gorecki's 3rd symphony and orchestral music of Alan Hovhaness. She writes of Mountainweeps: "As glaciers continue to shrink, alpine plants and creatures migrate further toward the sky, which they will do until there is no ice or upward left to follow, until they are ghosts".

The second cello concerto is by Ukrainian composer Thomas de Hartmann. He was influenced by his spiritual leanings as a follower of Gurdjieff from 1916 to 1930 and his interest in Jewish spirituality and music. His cello concerto was strongly influenced by the latter. Composed while he was living in Paris in 1935, he was deeply troubled by the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and he wrote this work with memories of Ukrainian Jewish klezmer and cantorial singing in his ears, as well as Ukrainian folk idioms. We hear a new recording of this obscure concerto released as part of the Thomas de Hartmann Project.

We will end with some fabulous tunes from Montreal's "dub-punk Slavic folk" band Dumai Dunai. Their repertoire is rooted in singer Natalia Telentso’s home country of Ukraine. Their new album "Sometime Between Now and Never" is full of fire and joy!

A bit of serendipity, India Gailey studied with Matt Haimovitz for her Master's in Montreal.
