CKCU Funding Drive episode II: Stand up for multiculturalism, pluralism,
diversity, our shared humanity!
With the days getting darker, both literally and figuratively, now is the time to stand up and be counted! Stand up for a truly independent station which celebrates community and inclusion. Stand up for my program which has championed multiculturalism, diversity, and our shared humanity as demonstrated through music! Stand up for joy!
30 years I have been on-air at CKCU, and my appreciation and knowledge of music has just continued to grow, as has my desire to share it with you.
Please stand up and show your support for CKCU!
We'll hear a wide selection of some of my favourite music today, both old and new! |

Four flamenco guitars led by Bernabe de Moron from his 1959 recording, followed by a new release from Canadian experimental and jazz electric guitarist Tim Brady and his composition Five times: four guitars... for four guitars!

The chorus of stunning, piercing voices from Janka Jobateh, Fanta Kuyateh, and Jeni Doumbia push this song into the stratosphere, one of my favourite songs from anywhere in Africa. From Jali Mousa Jawara's debut 1983 album when he was only 21. |
Haidara Jali Musa Jawara - Yasimika - Rykodisc |
In the early 2000's, Jali Musa Jawara was playing in his Kora Jazz Trio with Abdoulaye Diabate on piano and Moussa Cissoko on percussion. |
N'Dimi The Kora Jazz Trio - The Kora Jazz Trio - Celluloid |
Another absolute favourite. Tinariwen from their 3rd international release in 2007. A song that feels like it can stretch out to infinity, like the horizon in the Sahara from camel back. Such unforgettable longing in these songs... |
Matadjem Yinmixan Tinariwen - Aman Iman |
Another absolute favourite song from the Kamkars! |
Set Me Free The Kamkars - Kani Sepi - Kereshmeh |
