Violinist Arun Ramamurthy joins me to present his sophomore album with his Trio "New Moon". 30 for 30 with Shankar's "Raga Aberi".

Arun Ramamurthy joins me today to talk about his new sophomore album with his trio. "New Moon" is a 4-part suite which explores his family tradition and multiculturalism growing up in a Carnatic music family in the United States. It is a tremendous work which features Arun Ramamurthy on violin, Sameer Gupta on drums, and Damon Banks on electric bass.

Continuing the celebration of my 30 years on-air at CKCU with 30 of the most significant albums in my musical evolution, we hear this week an album by the amazing Carnatic violinist L. Shankar. When I first heard Shankar with his 1995 album "Raga Aberi" , my jaw dropped. His ferocious virtuosity and brilliance on his unique, custom-made double-necked 10 string violin defies comprehension. It is a full performance--a Ragam Tanam Pallavi--in Raga Aberi. The pure solo Ragam is musical ecstasy! He is joined by Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram.

Thanks, D. I must be getting old haha. To really know, you would have to cut off my leg and count the rings. Double necked 10 string violin is jaw dropping indeed. Sounds like nothing I have ever heard.......mesmerizing!

sadly, L. Shankar had this bizarre change in his musical path since the early 2000s. Most of his music since has been almost New Agey stuff, often with various pop and rock musicians. It's like if Coltrane did not die young, and in 1970 suddenly became Kenny G...

Seeing Shankar live would be a mind altering experience. I have never heard anything quite like this and it is so full and rich and exhilarating. Thank you, David once again for sharing these amazing artists every week.. And thanks for The 30 for 30 list so I can refer back to listen to more from these artists.
