Ballaké Sissoko and Derek Gripper's new release; guitar from all over Africa; new music from Canada's Gabriel Dharmoo, Florian Hoefner, John Kameel Farah & Nick Fraser.
I've had the sounds of Derek Gripper's wonderful concert last week in my ears and have delved even more than usual into African music since the concert. So the first hour will be given over to African music, including Ballaké Sissoko and Derek Gripper's brand new album, as well as guitar music from all over Africa.
The second hour will be mostly new Canadian music from a variety of adventurous composers and musicians, demonstrating just how eclectic the Canadian music scene is these days.

The second hour showcases the incredible diversity of new Canadian music, starting with a new recording from composer Gabriel Dharmoo with members of the NACO. He studied composition at universities in Laval and Montreal, before spending some time in India studying Carnatic music. Next is a new album coming out tomorrow with pianist John Kameel Farah and drummer Nick Fraser. They met in the Toronto experimental jazz scene. This album features improvisations which were then further reworked with electronics by Farah.
https://nickfraserthedrummer.bandcamp.com/album/farahser The third new album features compositions by German-Canadian Florian Hoefner, who now teaches at Memorial university in St. John's. His background is in jazz piano, and this album features his first compositions for classical trio with piano, clarinet, and viola. Commissioned by the Iris Trio, this is the first in a multi-chapter project with environmental themes. We also hear from Constantinople's extraordinary album with Italian early music specialist Marco Beasley. They are coming back to Ottawa to perform at the Chamberfest this July! We end the set with a wonderful duet between Kiran Ahluwalia and Algerian singer Souad Massi from her new album! |
