Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen's thrilling recording with the Kronos Quartet. Montreal composer Patrick Giguère's new composition "Intimes Exubérances".

At Kiran Ahluwalia's concert last week, with the accordion of Louis Simao in my ears, I was speaking with PeterB about the Jazz Festival. The amazing, experimental Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen came up, and I've had his collaboration with the Kronos Quartet stuck in my head since. So I'll share this irresistible music with you. This music is defined by momentum and rhythm. It is a thrilling ride which takes you along at turbo speed! Strap in!

Speaking with Louis Simao, I asked him if he played harmonium, as it is related to the accordion, and though the accordion fit really well with the Indian music, the harmonium has become an essential Indian instrument. He said he was looking into getting one! We hear a short piece from a rare solo harmonium Hindustani recording, as it is almost always an accompanying instrument in Indian classical music, Qawwali, folk, and popular traditions.
Mishra Pilu - Tappa
Sanatan Goswami - Renaissance - Bihaan Music
For the second hour, we'll hear a new piece for solo piano by Montreal composer Patrick Giguère, performed by Canadian pianist Cheryl Duvall, who specializes in contemporary music. Though the piano is also Giguère's instrument, he avoided writing music for his instrument for 15 years prior to this piece, as he finds there is so much baggage and familiarity with the piano repertoire, but after this hiatus, he came back to the piano with a huge piece, composed with pianist Cheryl Duvall in mind.

David, all, Unfortunately, I cannot stick around much live today. BUT 'Uniko' is indeed AMAZING. Enjoy. Fellow listeners who like what you hear, DO check out the rest of Kimmo's catalogue -- all great! A personal fave of mine is w. KTU (pron. "K2"), '8-Armed Monkey' LIVE along with Samuli Kosminen (drums), Pat Mastelotto (far more drums), Trey Gunn (massive Warr Guitar), latter 2 of King Crimson background. JUST MASSIVE!!

Very exciting experience today, David!! And thank you Peter for the additional recommendations!! If I wasn't already hooked.......you made the King Crimson reference! Now I am really "locked and loaded". One of my big regrets is to have not found a way to see King Crimson live!! I watch everything I can find on youtube. So thanks guys!!!
