Kiran Ahluwalia's latest; recent and new albums from Analog Africa; 30 for 30 with Liszt's Transcendental Etudes.
We start today with the brand new album from Kiran Ahluwalia entitled "Comfort Food". Despite the warm title, the album was inspired by the sense of helplessness she felt about the growing intolerance and extreme Hindu nationalism in her homeland of India. The songs are her response and they strive to give voice to the marginalized--in doing so, they became her "comfort food". The songs range from political protest to infectious, joyful tunes about love and relationships. There is also a wonderful collaboration with Algerian singer Souad Massi.
We will also hear from three new and recent releases on the fabulous label Analog Africa, with a new compilation of Congolese music from the neighbouring capitals Kinshasha and Brazzaville; Guinean guitarist Leon Keita whose extraordinary career was spent in Mali, including being a co-founder of the legendary Rail Band; and an album of 60's Foro master Ary Lobo from Northern Brazil.
Kiran Ahluwalia will be appearing in Ottawa at the Shenkman Arts Centre in two weeks, on April 25!

In the second half of the show, we will continue my year-long celebration of 30 years on-air at the mighty 93.1 with a look at 30 of the most significant albums in my musical evolution. Today, we will hear Franz Liszt's "12 Etudes d'exécution transcendante" performed by Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau. I first heard this album after taking it out of the Carleton University library in the early 90's. Even though I had been playing piano for years, this was my first introduction to both Liszt and a new level of piano virtuosity. Liszt, both the composer and the man, has become more crucial to my understanding and approach to music than almost any other musical figure. Claudio Arrau was also an exceptional interpreter of Liszt (or any other composer he chose!), and he was a "grand-student" of Liszt, having studied with Liszt's student Martin Krause who studied with Liszt in 1882. Arrau studied with Martin Krause for 5 years from the age of 10 until Krause died. The 15 year old Arrau did not take another teacher. The 12 Transcendental Etudes had their origin in 1826 with a 15 year old Liszt who composed an early version of 12 etudes. He revised them in 1837 in Paris making them extraordinarily more difficult and also taking on their more musical characteristics. He revised them again in 1852, slightly reducing their difficulty but increasing their musicality. It is this 1852 version which was published and played today (the earlier versions have been recorded by Leslie Howard in his exhaustive and huge survey of all of Liszt's piano music). Liszt dedicated the collection to his teacher, Carl Czerny, who was one of the most famous students of Beethoven. So there is a direct pedagogical line from Beethoven down to Claudio Arrau, who released this album in 1977.
