Montreal-based saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser, and composer Allison Burik's new allbum of music inspired by Nordic mythology; the Labyrinth of Pietro Locatelli; music from Cuba, Bulgaria and more.

Starting off today with a new album from Montreal-based saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser, and composer Allison Burik. Their album "Realm" was inspired by Nordic mythology and the compositions feature Burik playing alto sax, bass clarinet, flute, guitar, and vocals. There are also some electronics on some of the pieces. A fascinating album which we will hear in full (it's fairly short) interspersed with some other music which fits.

Next week is my annual Passion music show, but dipping my toes into it this week because tonight, Music & Beyond are presenting Bach's St. John Passion with L'harmonie des saisons on tour from Quebec. This is one of two extant Passions by Bach, the St. Matthew Passion is often considered the grander masterpiece, (but it's like pointing out that Everest is higher than K2) however the St. John Passion is the darker and more disturbing of the two. I find it to be some of the most disturbing music Bach wrote. This is very apparent in the magnificent opening chorus we hear today with its pulsating, throbbing, chromatic lines, this is not comforting music! The St. John Passion moves through the Betrayal and arrest, denial, interrogation and scourging, condemnation and crucifixion, death of Jesus, and burial, all with very little consolation. Certainly nothing like the transcendent bass aria "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein", the true emotional climax in the St. Matthew Passion, which offers blissful peace and consolation! "It is through human feelings – fear, pain, compassion – that the musician Bach, the preacher Bach, leads his listeners to contemplate the divine drama." - Gilles Cantagrel, Le Moulin et la rivière, 1998

There are still tickets left, tonight at Southminster at Bank and Alymer. Experience one of the greatest musical dramas tonight!

St. John Passion BWV 245 i. Chorus "Herr, unser Herrscher"
Johann Sebastien Bach/Collegium Vocale, Orchestre de la Chappelle Royale, Philippe Herreweghe - St. John Passion - Harmonia Mundi
After this opening chorus, we move into the final violin concerto from Pietro Locatelli's set of 12 violin concertos, L'arte del violino Op. 3 from 1733. Each concerto also featured two capprici, one in the opening and closing movements of each concerto. These capprici were not merely cadenzas, but almost independent works for solo violin inserted in the concertos, which contrasted with the movement. They pushed the limits of violin virtuosity in Baroque music, and were very influential for later violin technique and composition. For example, Paganini's "24 Caprices for solo violin" were a direct homage to the Locatelli's 24 cappricis contained in the 12 concertos. The capprici in the 12th concerto, are famed for being the most difficult violin writing in Baroque music. Locatelli inscribed the following beneath the first cappricio in this concerto: "Laberinto armonico: 'Facilis aditus; difficilis exitus.'" ("Harmonic Labyrinth: Easy to enter; difficult to escape!")
