FUNDING DRIVE TOO, music from all over the world
FUNDING DRIVE! My second and final show for the 2023 funding drive. First, a huge thank you to everyone who has already donated so far! THANK YOU! You are why I do this show and have have been doing it for nearly 30 years, I want to share this enormous world of music with you.
There is so much wrong with the world this year, but music is not a luxury item. Every society, every culture in human history has had music as an integral component. Music has evolved with language many many thousands of years ago and it is an essential part of being human. Humanity is no more able to survive without music than without language (including sign or other non-verbal language). Here, on CKCU and particularly on my program, we explore what it means to be human with music from all over the world and historical periods--musical threads which connect cultures and people and expose the common experience of life we all share.

| Listening to a new album of music performed by the Cheng Duo, a Canadian sibling duo for cello and piano with Bryan & Silvie. This new album was inspired by cello and piano heroes Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter and how they often collaborated with composers of their time to commission new music. This album "Portrait" features all works or arrangements commissioned by the Chengs. We will hear the first piece by the amazing Canadian musician, composer, and conductor Dinuk Wijeratne who composed this piece for the Chengs in 2020 to be performed as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. As such, he used material from the scherzo from Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata this work. |
