Always side with the child over the gun. Music from Iranian, Moroccan, Hassidic Jews; Hamza El Din and Pharoah Sanders at their most spiritual.

I look out at the world today and despair. We are witnessing the very worst of humanity in Israel and Gaza. Terrible people are in control on both sides and I fear they have and will continue to make the worst decisions possible. What can I do? What can any of us do? I wish for a world where leaders and humanity always "side(s) with the child over the gun every single time, no matter whose gun and no matter whose child" (Naomi Klein writing about this current horror). What can I do today? I will celebrate the very best of humanity. I have programmed nearly 100 minutes of unbroken music, full of spiritual peace, prayers, and beauty. Starting and ending with Pharoah Sanders at his most meditative, with his 1977 "Harvest Time", in a new reissue which features the full 1977 album "Pharoah" as well as two never before released live recordings of "Harvest Time" from his 1977 European tour. We will also hear prayers from Iranian, Moroccan, and Hassidic Jews; Pharoah Sanders in his exploration of Sufism in Essaouria and Hamza El Din's astonishing, nearly 30 minute solitary prayer, like an ascetic hermit from the Egyptian desert.

In all this darkness, I need to grab on to good news. I am proud of Poland for voting out their anti-democratic/populist party and embracing hopeful change with these elections. The Polish have been among the most ardent supporters of Ukraine in its war for survival. The Polish have long memories. We will hear their greatest composer Chopin in a work he composed almost certainly in reaction to the Polish uprising against the Russian empire in 1830-31 which ended in Polish defeat and enormous Polish losses. His 1st scherzo in b minor is a jagged, violent, chaotic, despairing work. He composed it while he was trapped unhappily in Vienna, worrying and grieving over his Polish family and compatriots. We hear an incredible recording by Ukrainian-born Jewish pianist Vladimir Horowitz, who played this dramatic work unlike any other pianist living or dead. A "scherzo" is "joke" in Italian, Schumann commented on the complete disregard for the title: "How is 'gravity' to clothe itself if 'jest' goes about in dark veils?"
Szhero no. 1 in b minor Op 20

Thanks very much David for this message-driven, spiritual, program. The world is indeed a train-wreck in progress these days. Middle East, eastern Europe, Kim's N Korea getting cuddly with Putin's Russia dictatorships, USA pissing on the fire with massive weaponry in the left hand. Meanwhile Gaia is EXTREMELY PISSED OFF ... And on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on .... "All we are saying, is give peace a chance"
