McCoy Tyner at his 70's finest; African funk and grooves; Bach and Vivaldi and strings.
Today's show will begin with a set of African funk and grooves mainly from the 1970's, bookended by pieces from McCoy Tyner's 1974 album "Sama Layuca". This studio album featured pianist Tyner, joined by an octet with John Stubblefield, flute; Gary Bartz, alto sax; Azar Lawrence, tenor and soprano sax; Bobby Hutcherson, vibes, marimba; Buster Williams, bass; Billy Hart, drums; Guilherme Franco and James Mtume on percussion. This large group produced thickly textured modal jazz with Afro-Latin tinges. It is a deliciously rich 70's sound.

| I always love musical bookends, and I often create them when I am listening at home too. This next set will also feature richly textured musical bookends, courtesy of Bach, with his transcription, almost re-composition, of a Vivaldi double violin concerto. He reworked it for organ, but the first version we will hear is a further transformation with a transcription for piano by Isidore Philip. |
