Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, never forgotten, especially on my show. He died far too young on August 16th, 1997, only 48 years old. Today we will feature what I believe is the longest recording of a Qawali by Nusrat, a live recording of "Yeh jo halka halka saroor hai" by the 20th century Urdu poet Anwar Farrukhabadi. This ghazal sings of being intoxicated by love "Your love and your longing/your intoxicating glances/made me a drunkard." As in all Sufi poetry, it is alluding to divine love. This ecstatic 68 minute performance was recorded in Birmingham, within the United Kingdom's South Asian community, in 1983, where many of Nusrat's early appearances outside Pakistan occurred.
We will also hear, before and after this performance, two short ghazals sung solo by Nusrat, without his customary chorus and accompanying soloists.
