Women's World Cup, music from the knockout nations.
The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is underway in Australia and New Zealand. The newly expanded tournament has had a lot of surprises and has been much more competitive. Half of the 32 teams are through to the knockout stage which begins this weekend, and we will hear music from most of these 16 nations. One of the bigger surprises at the World Cup has been the crowd pleasing Reggae Girlz from Jamaica and we will start with Koffee, a rising star in dancehall and reggae.
In the first set we hear music from Jamaica, Columbia, South Africa, Nigeria, Spain, and France/Morocco. |

This recording features the famous Abdelkrim Rais Andalusian orchestra of Fes with the French born singer Françoise Atlan. She has Sephardic heritage from the Mahgreb and has received Moroccan citizenship, so this album covers both France and Morocco. This weekend France plays Morocco in the knockout round. This is a rematch in a sense, in the 2022 Men's World Cup, Morocco was eliminated by France in the semi-finals. Many French-Moroccan citizens where torn in 2022, and now they face the same dilemma in 2023, but I am cheering for Morocco! |
