In Norway

I am still currently in Europe but have moved on from Leipzig, having taken the train to Germany's northern coast and a ferry across the North Sea to Oslo where this broadcast finds me now. I will share with you some music made in Norway, but, aside from some Grieg, it will not be obvious Norwegian music. We will start today's Norwegian show with Keith Jarrett and his Standards Trio live in Oslo recorded in 1989 and released in 1995 on ECM. The Standards Trio with Gary Peacock on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums released 21 albums from 1983-2014, most of them live albums, "Standards in Norway" was their 4th live album. We will hear most of their live set.

For me, there will always be a little bit of Africa in Norway, maybe more than a little. Momodou 'Miki' N'Doye is a drummer and singer from The Gambia, where he was a co-founder of The Super Ballet Afric, which represented The Gambia in west Africa and Europe. He emigrated to Norway in 1976, where he became very involved in the Norwegian jazz scene. We will start the next set with some selections from his 2002 album "Joko" where he leads a 10 piece orchestra in his own compositions, as well as a few traditional pieces.

Terje Isungset is another Norwegian drummer who has spent a large amount of his time creating effervescent instruments and art made of ice. He founded the annual Ice Music Festival in 2006 where the entire venue, instruments, and art, is made of ice and snow.

Of course we will hear something from Norway's most famous national composer, Edvard Grieg. His 3rd violin sonata was completed in 1886 and actually received its premiere in Leipzig in December 1887, with Grieg at the piano. Mahler was living and working in Leipzig then, perhaps he even attended the premiere?

"The sonics of ice!" ... That got me thinking of an amazing mis-adventure with let's call him Bill, because it is his name. We went out for a sail in very small boats on Lac Dechenes (west Ottawa, on that big bulge in the river) at peak ice break up. The water was full of tiny icicles. It sounded like sailing through a giant chandelier. And the water has a very special aroma at breakup. GORGIOUS. But a very bad idea safety-wise of course. Totally worth every nanosecond.
