Central Asia in concert I: Uzbekistan's Yulduz Turdieva; new Jazz releases
Today we will hear the first of two concerts featuring musicians from Central Asia. Both of these concerts were recorded at the extraordinary Morgenland Festival in Osnabrück, Germany. This concert features a quartet from Uzbekistan led by Yulduz Turdieva. At the time of this concert, recorded in 2009, she was only 24 years old, yet this gifted prodigy had already mastered the demanding Uzbek classical and popular traditions, as well as Azeri traditions from Azerbaijan. She also sings songs from Persian traditions in her own inimitable style. This wide mastery had stunned judges at a large international vocal competition in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2009, where she won with unanimous acclaim. She is accompanied by Ylugbek Temirov on the doyra, Qahramon Boltaev on tar and rubab, Aduvohid Mirza-Ahmedov on the bowed gijaak and violin and performs a selection of Uzbek classical and popular songs, Azerbaijani classical songs, as well as a couple of Persian songs.
We will also hear a couple of new releases from Clean Feed Records, including "In Memoriam" by Canadian clarinetist François Houle and "Chromosone" by Portuguese drummer Mário Costa.
