The culturally diverse music of Derrick Skye; new unknown music from Sudan, Mexico; Utsav Lal; Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia.

Today's show is built around the music of American composer Derrick Skye. As a history buff, Derrick Skye's exploration of his mixed West African and European background has greatly informed his composition. He draws upon many music cultures in his work, such as the title track of his 2015 album "Prisms, Cycles, Leaps", which draws upon Hindustani and Ghanaian rhythms and Bulgarian melodies. This wonderful piece is being performed tonight by the NAC Orchestra and only a few tickets are left! We will hear three other great works of his throughout today's show and this makes me want to hear more from this young composer! https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/30023 We will also hear from a couple of new or upcoming releases of music virtually unknown outside of their origin. Ostinato Records returns to East Africa with an upcoming release of contemporary music from a band of Beja musicians--Beja being a small minority found in Eastern Sudan. The other new release is from Analog Africa and is a compilation of Rebajada music from Mexico. This is actually a type of remixed music, you could say, a scene in Mexico City and Monterrey where djs adjust the tempos of vinyl records. Rebajada drove a popular underground dance scene in the 1970s, particularly in Monterrey, where music from Peru, Ecuador and especially Columbia became popular sources for this slow tempo music. It became an art to find the sweet spot where the music still sounded really good, maybe even better, at the slower tempo.

The reclusive Romanian pianist Radu Lupu died earlier this week, and his sometimes duo-piano partner Murray Perahia just celebrated his 75th birthday. We start this next set with their 1985 recording of Schubert's dark and baleful Fantasia in f minor, composed in the final year of his short life. We also hear two very different and unique interpretations of Rag Shuddha Sarang, the first for string quintet with tabla by Ivan Fischer and the second for piano with Utsav Lal. We end with another delicious work from Derrick Skye.
