Sarathy Korwar's latest; a selection of Canadiana; Carnatic violinist L. Subramaniam with Hungarian violinist Roby Lakatos.

I finally received what has turned out to be one of the very best albums of 2020, Sarathy Korwar's "Night Dreamer Direct-to-Disc". This album was released at the end of November through Bandcamp, and though I could have downloaded digital files, I waited for the LP. I am really happy I did--this is the best sounding vinyl I have heard! The "Nightdreamer" series are single-take recordings made direct to disc at Artone studios in the Netherlands. However, it's not just the quality of the recording which is most impressive, it's the music. Fantastic! It is 100% improvisation with Sarathy Korwar on drums, Tamar Osborn on sax, Achuthan Sripathamanathan on violin, Giuliano Modarelli on guitar, and Alistair MacSween on keyboards. We will hear the full album (save for the one remixed track).
We hear a set of mostly Canadiana with very diverse Canadians, representing new immigrants, older settler populations, and indigenous Canadians, both Métis and Inuit. However, this set will be bookended by two pieces from the 2020 violin collaboration between Carnatic virtuoso L. Subramaniam and popular Hungarian violinist Roby Lakatos.

L. Subramaniam & Roby Lakatos - Peacock - Avanti Classic
These four amazing tracks have large differences in texture and sound with only five musicians. The first track almost sounds full of portent, like a more raw and visceral Peter Gabriel soundtrack (i.e. Passion). The second is a celebration of brass and rhythmn. The pacing of the whole album is perfect, perhaps a testament to being led by such a superb percussionist. Unfortunately I am still programming from home, so we won't be able to hear the vinyl as I am using .wav files for pandemic programming. It will be one of the first albums we hear again when I do return to the CKCU studios!

Rajasthani master of the sindhi sarangi, Lakha Khan, has joined a long list of the greatest Indian musicians such as Bhimsen Joshi, Bismillah Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Jasraj, Amjad Ali Khan, Girija Devi and others in being awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. We hear a piece from a performance in Copenhagen 2016 released last year on Amarrass Records (I think we should hear the full concert on an upcoming show soon).
