Beethoven's several attempts at composing an overture to his only opera Fidelio left us with this masterpiece. It is closer to a symphonic poem than an overture, and was far too overwhelming for the opening operatic pieces which were meant to follow. In the hands of one of Beethoven's greatest conductors, it is a fitting end for my final show of 2019.
