Rachid Taha's final album. Chopin, new music from Alex Cuba, Mariachi Los Camperos, the Brooklyn Funk Essentials and more.
Rachid Taha died suddenly from a heart attack last September at the age of 60. But up to his death nothing was slowing him down, he collaborated on Goran Bregovic's recent album, and he had finished his 11th solo album "Je suis Africain". It has become his final album, full of the rage and humour that defines his career.
I have been reading Alan Walker's recent Chopin biography. Alan Walker's 3 volume Liszt biography remains for me the gold standard in composer biographies. Exhaustively researched and extremely thorough in detail, it has dispelled all the nonsense surrounding Liszt. He has done the same with Chopin. As a result of my immersion in the music of Chopin, we will be hearing his music pop up, including his 5th and last essay in sonata form, his Sonata for Cello and Piano. He spent significant amount of time writing this work and completed it in 1846. Chopin and the dedicatee, cellist Auguste Franchomme with whom he premiered the last 3 movements at Chopin's final Parisian public concert in 1848.
We will also hear new music from Alex Cuba, Mariachi Los Camperos, the Brooklyn Funk Essentials and more.
