Starting 2011 with Liszt's grand and dramatic symphonic poem "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne". Inspired by a poem by Victor Hugo which stands in awe of the beauty and massiveness of nature and contrasts it with the drama, pain, and sadness of humanity. Liszt captures and explores these elements perfectly in his first revolutionary symphonic poem. The orchestral music of Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Mahler would be unthinkable without the influence of Liszt's orchestral innovations.
2011 marks the bicentennial anniversary of Liszt's birth. I will be celebrating this throughout the year with a exploration of Liszt's enormous and diverse repertoire.
