Spanish guitar with Pepe Romero and family, Palestinian and Moroccan Oud, Senegalese classics

Today’s program will heavily feature musical cousins the guitar and oud. Legendary champion of Spanish guitar, Pepe Romero, will be appearing in Ottawa next week to play Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the NAC Orchestra. We will hear Pepe Romero in solo guitar by Spanish composers, as well as Flamenco, and also his family group Los Romeros. Los Romeros was founded by his father Celedonio Romero; it was a quartet with Celedonio’s 3 sons, Pepe, Celin, and Angel. Los Romeros quartet it still active, but with brothers Pepe and Celin, and Celin’s son Celino and Angel’s son Lito. We will hear the original line-up in a recording of Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz for four guitars and orchestra from 1967 which was commissioned by Celedonio Romero and premiered by the quartet. It is a tremendous privilege to see Pepe Romero in concert. Music often runs in families, particularly as a profession; we will hear a family group on the Oud, the Trio Joubran featuring brothers Samir, Wissam, Adnan, this Israeli Palestinian family from Nazareth have been performing as a trio since 2004. We will also hear some Andalusian oud with Moroccan master Said Chraibi, and some more great Senegalese classics, which I have been listening to obsessively these past few weeks!
