A retrospective of Pauline Oliveros' long career with electronic music from the 1960's to her last live performance in Ottawa 2013. Music from Bosnian singer Amir Medunjanin, Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov and more.

Today we look again at the unique music and career of Pauline Oliveros, who died two weeks ago. In nearly 6 decades her career has covered much ground and we will hear music from three distinct periods. From earlier in her career we hear some electronic music, Pauline Oliveros musical career was set on its radical path by tape recording technology and she composed a lot of music for tape, including this seminal piece “Bye Bye Butterfly” from 1965. This piece joined her fascination with sound and political statement as it uses an except from Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” which she wrote it “bids farewell not only ot the music of the 19th century but also to the system of polite morality of that age and its attendant institutionalized oppression of the female sex.” Moving to the middle of her career we hear a piece for her principal instrument, the accordion, from her 1982 album “Accordion & Voice”, where the acoustic instrument often sounds like her electronic music. And finally we hear a example of the music which preoccupied her for her last three decades, music making which joined electronics with her accordion and other acoustic instruments. Music recorded at her 2013 Ottawa appearance at the Dunrobin Sonic Gym celebrating the 25th anniversary of her Deep Listening Band. We will also hear from Bosnian singer Amira Medunjanin and Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov and more.

Sounds like equipment calibration sounds from 50s sci-fi! If we can just tune the Electro-Nuclear-Thermo-Radio-Exploiter to the correct frequency...
