For today's show, Shostakovich's 7th symphony from 1941, partly composed during the siege of Leningrad. A work he secretly dedicated against all totalitarianism, as much against that of Stalin as that of Hitler. The symphony was given its premiere in Leningrad during the siege in August 1942 by the same orchestra we hear in this recording from a 2003 concert in St. Petersburg.
