First recording of Arvo Part's latest work, his 4th Symphony

Today's show features Arvo Pärt's Symphony No. 4 for string orchestra and percussion. His first symphony in 37 years. Commissioned and premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009 and recorded it in 2010. It is a work of stunning beauty and stillness, though it has moments of tension and darkness, ultimately rising towards spiritual peace. Before hearing this new work, we hear a wide range of other music to set the mood, both beautiful and profound, focusing mostly on strings and voices. Starting with another exquisite work for string orchestra, the famous Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
