French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and his jazz tribute to Oum Kalthoum; new album from Bombino; Nana Vasconcelos
Today we will hear a wonderful new album from French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf "Kalthoum", his tribute to the supreme Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum. Ibrahim Maalouf is the son of Nassim Maalouf, a brilliant trumpeter who invented the quarter-tone trumpet in order to play Arabic music on it. Ibrahim grew up in Beirut where his father taught him to sing all of Oum Kalthoum's songs, but he has always wanted to translate the songs for his trumpet. This album is the realization of that goal. He took one of Oum Kalthoum's most beloved songs, "Alf Leila Wa Leila" ("One Thousand and One Nights") and created a very free adaption with several of his longtime collaborators, German jazz pianist Frank Woeste, Americans Clarence Penn on drums, Larry Grenadier on double bass, Mark Turner on saxophone. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
We will also hear the new album from Omara 'Bombino' Moctar "Azel" and something from one of Nana Vasconcelos' later albums.
