Aissaoua Sufis from Morocco; Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden; Bach
Missing Morocco today, with Aissaoua Sufi music, truly my favourite of all Moroccan music with hypnotic singing and chanting, irrepressible and dense percussion, and which always sets the soul aflame with the piercing, incandescent double-reeded ghaitas. This music burns white-hot.
We will also hear two facets of Keith Jarrett: his Bach chamber music where he plays the harpsichord; and in duo with double bassist Charlie Haden; on the piano of course. Charlie Haden, a great exponent of free jazz with partners Ornette Coleman and Carla Bey, and also a four decade association with Keith Jarrett. Their final recording dates from 2007, the 40th anniversary of their first recording together, and has become their final recording together with the death of Charlie Haden on July 11th. Two recordings have been released with music from that 2007 session: the first, "Jasmine" in 2007 and the newly released "Last Dance" which we hear today.

All of Bach's chamber music for 2 or more instruments will be performed at this year's Chamber Music Festival by Canadian Ensemble Caprice on Aug 6th and 7th. We will be looking at Ensemble Caprice's adventurous mix of Bach and Shostakovich on next week's show. |
