Umm Kulthum, Marc-Andre Hamelin, Xenakis at the Chamberfest and more
Egypt has been on mind a lot recently both with the ongoing political turmoil there, and also because I have just finished reading the magnificent Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz which takes place from 1919 to 1945 in which several female singers are important characters and there is mention of the "new and upcoming" singer Umm Kulthum.

Looking at a couple of upcoming highlights of the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival in late July/early August, with a tremendous and rare program for a solo concert by Marc-Andre Hamelin, the three large, dramatic and passionate piano sonatas from Josef Haydn, Alexander Scriabin, Nikolai Medtner with their sonatas in c minor, f# minor, and e minor respectively. Hamelin will be performing these pieces on Saturday July 27. The festival will also be dedicating a concert to the music of Iannis Xenakis as part of their New Music Now series on Aug 5-6. The Waterboys are playing Friday night at the Bluesfest, I can't resist the guilty pleasure of playing a few of my favourite songs of theirs!
