Music of Constantine Caravassilis, Janos Starker playing Kodaly, Hungarian folk music and cross-cultural collaborations in Central Asia.

Christina Petrowska Quilico will be performing the complete Rhapsodies and Fantasias by Constantine Caravassilis this Saturday evening in Markham ON. Tickets are only $10! For more information please visit: http://www.ksorchestra.ca/MNMF/mnmf.html Two of the pieces I chose to play are, in to paraphrase Caravassilis, reaching out towards infinity, inspired by meditations on dying. Appropriate for the next piece, Kodaly's solo cello sonata, a signature piece for the great Hungarian cellist Janos Starker who passed away Monday. He was an important champion for this piece, rescuing it from obscurity to becoming a central piece in the cello repertoire with his 1948 recording of it winning the French Grand Prix du Disques. He performed it twice for Kodaly, 1939 in Budapest and 1967 shortly before Kodaly's death. We hear his 4th and final recording of the sonata from 1970, the only complete recording of the sonata Starker did (the 1st had cuts due to limitations of 78s and the 2nd and 3rd Starker made a cut in the 3rd movement).
