Cuba is famous for many things around the world, from its exemplary healthcare and education systems to great rum and cigars. While many Canadians visit Cuba for its extraordinary beaches, resorts and sun, many people from across Canada are also looking for other ways to experience this unique and exciting island. One way, is an incredible three week stay in Cuba on the 2010 Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade!
This spring the Che Brigade will depart on its 18th annual trip to Cuba, with 30-50 volunteers from across Canada. Brigade participants, also known as Brigadistas, will meet up in Toronto on April 28 to fly into Havana and will stay in Cuba until May 19. Visiting Pinar del Rio and Havana, Brigadistas will volunteer in the morning (our plan is to work in an organic urban garden) and in the afternoon will participate in different activities to learn about Cuban reality. “In previous years the Che Brigade has lent a hand in many areas, last year we worked at an urban organic farm, working alongside Cuban farmers. During that time many long lasting friendships were made,” explains Tamara Hansen, 2010 coordinator of the Che Brigade and five time brigade participant.
Throughout the trip Brigadistas have the opportunity to visit many interesting sites including: museums, factories, schools, the Cuban Federation of Women, Committees for the Defence of the Revolution, visiting Cuba’s healthcare system and the Latin American School of Medicine.
Visiting Cuba is not only about the volunteer work and education; there is also plenty of fun! The Che Brigade program includes free time to wander the streets of Cuba, learning the steps of salsa and reggeaton during our dance lessons, relaxing on the beach and a great chance to meet new people- both from Canada and Cuba! Every year people from across Cuba receive the Che Brigade with warmth and friendship, and every year many brigade members leave their new Cuban friends promising to return. Now is your chance to join this wonderful experience!
Cost of the 2010 Brigade: $1661.00 (includes 3 weeks accommodation, meals, and transportation, as well as flight from Toronto-Havana return. Flights from other cities to Toronto can be arranged independently or through Che Brigade travel agent).
