Let's step back in time. The year is 1849. Ottawa, or Bytown as it was then known, was a relatively sleepy town on the verge of greatness. In April of that same year, a new law was passed to compensate those who had lost businesses in a previous rebellion. Enraged that those who committed treason would still be compensated, a group of Tories took to rebellion and burned the Canadian Parliament to the ground (at this time, it was located in Montreal). A town meeting was then called for Monday, September 17th, 1849, at 1:30PM in Bytown. Enraged by the new law, Tories and Reformists flocked to the Market Square and before long, an all our brawl began; sticks and stones were used thus garnering the nickname "Stony Monday"
