Introduction to Transmisogyny with Fae Johnstone
7:30 PM on Tuesday Aug. 7th, 2018
Venus Envy, 226 Bank St.
Price: $25 ($0-$20 sliding scale)

Trans communities, like all communities, exist within intersections of privilege and marginalization. While we all too often homogenize these experiences, it is crucial that we acknowledge the ways in which privilege and oppression shape the everyday realities of different folks under the trans umbrella. This workshop will discuss the ways in which transmisogyny - the hatred and fear of trans women and transfeminine folks - permeates society. We will discuss how transmisogyny works in our society, the explicit and subtle ways in which it enacts itself, how individuals can work to confront and combat transmisogyny, and work in solidarity with trans women and transfeminine folks. This workshop will strive to address this topic from an intentional, intersectional and anti-oppressive approach.

Fae Johnstone (she/they) is a nonbinary transfeminine white settler living in Ottawa on unceded, unsurrendered Algonquin territory. She currently works as a Sex Educator and Retail Clerk at Venus Envy Ottawa, and as an independent consultant, educator and facilitator. She has a background working locally and provincially in child and youth mental health and LGBTQ+ identities. Since coming out as a nonbinary transfeminine person, she has been shocked and dismayed at the ways n which the intersection of transphobia and misogyny have impacted her life and that of her transfeminine peers, and this knowledge and experience shapes her desire to call attention to transmisogyny, and organize to confront it. She can be found on Twitter @faejohnstone

Venus Envy is a physically accessible space. We have an automatic door, no steps and a gender inclusive bathroom big enough for most mobility devices.

We use foldable, plastic chairs for our workshops. We have three softer chairs that we're happy to reserve if you get in touch with us before the workshop. As we sell some scented products, we're unfortunately unable to guarantee that the workshop will be a scent-free space. We do ask that guests refrain from wearing heavily scented products.

All attendees save 10% on any purchases made after the workshop!
