Sandra Dyck, director of the Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG),
is pleased to announce that the recipient of the second annual Gordon
J. Wood Print Purchase Prize is Mary Baranowski-Lowden.
“Thanks again to the generosity of the Gordon J. Wood endowment, CUAG
is able to celebrate and conserve the rich artistic response to the
Ottawa Valley and Outaouais areas in contemporary prints made by
regional artists,” said Dyck.
The jury selected two of Baranowski-Lowden’s 2014 works, Natural
Elements I and Natural Elements II, observing how they show mastery of
printmaking techniques including line etching, soft ground etching,
drypoint and especially the delicate operation of chine collé. As
juror Jean-Claude Bergeron noted, her compositions bear witness to her
love for and understanding of the natural world, and sympathetically
engage with the theme established for the Prize, that the winning
prints should depict the Ottawa Valley and Outaouais areas.
Bergeron, director of Galerie Jean-Claude Bergeron in Ottawa, was
joined on the jury by Stéphane Roy, assistant professor of art history
at Carleton, and Michael Davidge, CUAG’s assistant curator. The jury
was impressed by the quality and the range of submissions received,
attesting to the vitality of the art of printmaking in the Ottawa
valley. Davidge noted that regional printmakers have enthusiastically
responded to the Print Purchase Prize, and that he looks forward to
seeing the directions that enthusiasm will take in future years.
Mary Baranowksi-Lowden’s work will be unveiled at CUAG during the
opening reception for Human Nature, its summer blockbuster, on Monday,
27 April from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Baranowski-Lowden will be present
to accept the prize. Her work will remain on exhibit until Aug. 23,
