TACTICS is proud to be bringing Dead Unicorn Ink's Under Derek's Bed to Arts Court Theatre April 17th-25th.
An epic tale of monstrous proportions. Under Derek's Bed follows Derek, a recent widower, and his childhood friend Earl, the monster, as they attempt to save the sacred land of under the bed. This play is the final instalment in the inaugural TACTICS series and it comes from Fringe vets Dead Unicorn Ink. They have been bringing knockouts to the Fringe for years, like the award winning Playing Dead and Space Mystery From Outerspace. Using their signature B-style movie aesthetic, amazing design, and strong puppetry, Dead Unicorn Ink can give a play life like no one else.
Being a part of the TACTICS series in residence at Arts Court Theatre allows Dead Unicorn Ink their first opportunity to build a production that inhabits a theatre space for a two-week run and to let their incredible creativity in design and puppetry run wild. This is the fourth production in the new series of independent productions, following Evolution Theatre's Young Lady in White, Lisa Jeans' multi-media exploration of anorexia LIGHT, and May Can Theatre's darkly comic HappinessTM. Series Curator Bronwyn Steinberg explains that "each of these productions has really had the opportunity to transform Arts Court Theatre, bringing new stories to the stage in innovative ways that simply beg to be experienced live. It has been so exciting to get to support these fantastic artists, and I simply can't wait to see Dead Unicorn Ink's production and our season finale."
Written by Sylvie Recoskie and directed by Martin Glassford with a stellar design team led by Patrice Forbes, Under Derek's Bed brings together many of Ottawa's finest emerging talents. This adult fairytale explores grief and the loss of a loved one in a playful and theatrical style, resulting in an exciting adventure of imaginative characters, forgotten dreams and time tested bromance.
